Farewell NS 1700

Between 1990 and 1994 eighty-one Class 1700 locomotives were built by Alstom. These were an iteration of the Class 1600 that came before, based on the French BB 7200. Over the years they were used in a push-pull configuration for DD-AR coaches, ICRm coaches, and others. By the 2010s most of the locomotives were no longer used and in 2019 the 1700 locomotives were only used to pull the IC Berlin train from Amsterdam to Bad Bentheim by NS. Designed to only support 1500V DC, the locomotive is then swapped for a German one which then pulls the passenger carriages to Berlin.

I’ve gotten the opportunity to film the NS 1700 with the IC Berlin carriages on a few occasions.

This weekend I rode to Hilversum to watch the NS 1700 series locomotive pull passenger coaches towards Berlin. The NS 1700 series is an electric locomotive based on the French BB 7200 and improved over the NS 1600 series, both built by Alsthom.

Altogether, 81 NS 1700 series locomotives were ordered in the 1990s but only 8 are in operation by NS today. The rest have either been scrapped or sold to other train operators. Initially, they were used to haul double-decker train trunks and ICRm carriages around the Netherlands, now they only operate the IC Berlijn route.

NVBS organised a farewell ride as soon the IC Berlin route will be pulled by Siemens Vectron locomotives instead until the end of 2024 when they’re expected to be replaced by ICE-L built by Talgo.

They were also kind enough to pre-announce the route the train would take in preparation for the farewell ride so spotters could go the day before and see the train. I took the opportunity to film the train pass Weesp on that rainy Saturday afternoon.

On the day itself, NVBS did a fantastic job of putting together a great photo opportunity at Rotterdam Stadion of 1600/1800 and 1700 locomotives. This was also open to the public and announced well in advance. A good many pictures and videos came from that day as well. Also, props to my wife for making it out with me on both days regardless of how cold it was 😄.
